The VOTE People Property Owner Protest The New York City Planning Commission has developed a proposal to rezone 125th Street in Harlem. The proposed rezoning would cause the immediate displacement of at least 71 local businesses, bring 30-story towers filled with market-rate luxury apartments, and make no accomdation for the residents, business and places of historical importance that would get in its way. VOTE People believes the proposal is destructive to the community in a number of ways, above all that the process used to develop it did not include adequate community awareness and participation. Despite the City Planning Commission's claims of significant community engagement, the proposal does not reflect the needs nor interests of the long-time Harlem community that have been vociferously expressed to date. [Learn more: VOTE People's Position Paper on the Proposed Rezoning] On April 1, VOTE People announced that it would use a 110 year old law, part of the original New York City Charter, to bring a protest on behalf of affected property owners in the immediate area of the rezoning. The protest would force the City Council to approve the rezoning by three-fourths vote, rather than a simple majority vote.
