Looking at the signed agreement between City Officials on modifying the rezoning proposal:

Why the reported 46% affordable housing is more like 5% for Harlem residents.

Representing the Voices Of The Everyday People, VOTE People works to speak the collective voice of communities impacted by economic, political and legal reform and to secure the fundamental rights of those communities.

Currently, VOTE People is focusing on defeating New York City's proposal to rezone 125th Street, Harlem's main street. The rezoning would bring the mass displacement of long-time residents and small businesses while allowing for towering buildings to replace Harlem's internationally known and loved neighborhood charm. Worst of all, the plan was developed without meaningful consideration of the needs and interests of the community.

VOTE People itself lives, works, and communes in Central Harlem and as such takes particular offense to the systematic exiling of its people and culture.

The VOTE People Property Owner Protest

The New York City Planning Commission has developed a proposal to rezone 125th Street in Harlem. The proposed rezoning would cause the immediate displacement of at least 71 local businesses, bring 30-story towers filled with market-rate luxury apartments, and make no accomdation for the residents, business and places of historical importance that would get in its way.

VOTE People believes the proposal is destructive to the community in a number of ways, above all that the process used to develop it did not include adequate community awareness and participation. Despite the City Planning Commission's claims of significant community engagement, the proposal does not reflect the needs nor interests of the long-time Harlem community that have been vociferously expressed to date.

On April 1, VOTE People announced that it would use a 110 year old law, part of the original New York City Charter, to bring a protest on behalf of affected property owners in the immediate area of the rezoning.

The protest would force the City Council to approve the rezoning by three-fourths vote, rather than a simple majority vote.
